To be eligible to vote, you must be:
- A resident of New Mexico
- A citizen of the United States
- At least 18 years old. 17-year-olds who will be 18 by the General Election may participate in the primary election. Voters must be at least 18 years old to participate in all other elections.
- Upon their release from incarceration, persons convicted of felonies are authorized to register to vote and participate in elections in New Mexico, even if they are being released to parole or another form of supervision.
- If a person was already registered to vote in New Mexico when they became incarcerated, they could vote without re-registering upon release.
To determine if you qualify to have your voting rights restored following a felony conviction you can contact the NM Department of Corrections, Division of Parole and Probation (505-827-8830), or a comparable agency in the state in which you were convicted.
